Dialectical Behaviour Therapy workshop

Overview

DBT or dialectal behavioral therapy is a psychotherapeutic approach to mental health that is modified and made to help people with personality disorders like borderline personality disorder, eating disorders, suicidal ideation, mood disorders and substance use. In DBT, the therapist seeks to provide an individual with validation and acceptance of their thoughts and maladaptive behaviours while directing them toward healthier options and achieving the ideal harmony between acceptance and change over a minimum of six months. DBT mainly involves four modules which the individual has to take; core mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotional regulation. Developing mindfulness kills helps to stay grounded and avoid engaging in negative thoughts and impulsive behaviors. Distress tolerance helps to accept oneself in their current situation, prepare for intense emotional situations and develop techniques for handling a crisis. Interpersonal effectiveness helps individuals to be assertive in healthy interpersonal relationships. Emotional regulation also helps to identify one’s emotions and cope with them, and reducing their emotional vulnerability.
